Rental for unused nights, those resulting from delayed check-in or early check-out, is not refundable. I understand that sometimes plans fall through. For any amendment or cancellation of your booking, please make sure to email me or call me at least two weeks ahead of your check-in date. In the case of a guest "No Show", the reservation will be cancelled. As I do not request any deposit or pre-payment while making a reservation, as most of other hotels and apartment owners do require, I do ask renters who make a booking with me, honor their reservations and value my flexible booking service. I appreciate your courtesy towards my business and the cancellation policy. As a result of a "No Show" and no attempt to contact me before hand, the name of the renter will be listed on my web page's BLACK LIST that can be searched by most search engines when any one search for the person's relevant information, and will be added to the official BLACK LIST in the country, due to making false reservations. The individual will encounter a problem when attempting to reserve a rental in the future with any and all other hotels or apartments.

Designated by the State Council as one of China's foremost protected monuments in 1961, the Palace Museum was also made a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987.

Buying a Train Ticket

Train travel is generally a great way to get around China. It is cheap (much less expensive than air travel) and generally very comfortable. Gone are the days of wooden seats at ninety-degree angles with loud speakers blaring propaganda. Trains nowadays have four classes, refreshment carts and decent (if not fabulous) bathrooms.
Obstacles to Buying a Train Ticket

But the first step in all of this is booking a ticket and here is where China is lagging behind the rest of the world. First, the only way to book a train ticket is for you, or someone on your behalf, to go physically to the station from which you're departing and buy you a ticket.

Second, train seats aren't released very far in advance and there's really no telling when seats go on sale. Generally, you can buy tickets two weeks prior to your departure date. But if you're thinking about booking now for next year, forget it.

This is all rather a pain, especially if you're backpacking through China around Chinese New Year and you want to make sure you get that soft sleeper from Beijing to Shanghai for the twelve-hour trip.

Overcoming the Train Ticket Obstacles

Obviously, if you've got the time, you can go to the station yourself and book your tickets. But if you can't, then agents can act on your behalf.

If you're not physically in China, find yourself a good travel agent in China to book things for you. A Chinese agent will be cheaper than your agent back home and probably a little more flexible. Of course there will likely be a nominal fee on top of the ticket price, but this is worth the peace-of-mind as well as the time saved.

Your agent can courier you the tickets to wherever you are but the thing to do is just to have them hold on to the tickets until you arrive in China and then have them sent to wherever you're staying.

Another way to go about booking tickets without your physical presence is to ask your hotel concierge to do it. Even if you're at a small inn without a concierge, they will likely be able to help you out. Again, especially for that small inn with no official concierge, you can probably talk them into going for you for a small fee.

The Joy of Train Travel

Now sit back with a good book or just watch the stretch of humanity go by your window. One of the luxuries of train travel is that it allows you to see just what lays in between the cities of millions that dot the country.

GSM networks (GSM 1800 and 900) provide coverage in every city. CDMA network run by China Unicom is improving its coverage. It has signed agreements with 13 other mobile operators from North America, South America and the Asia-Pacific region, with networks covering 60 per cent of global CDMA subscribers. So roaming with a dual band or tri band handset or use of COSMOTE card alike will make your phone work in China. Mobile phone rental service is hardly available in China.

It is easy to buy a local GSM SIM card in China. Shenzhouxing, issued by China Mobile and Ruyitong, issued by China Unicom are recommended for foreign travelers in China, since they require no document. A SIM card costs around100 RMB (with RMB50 for making phone calls) depends on its provider and combination of numbers. Prepaid charging card in amount of 50 RMB and 100 RMB are available in post offices, stores, newsstands and super markets. It is easy to use with bilingual prompt. When you call and the credit is low, a voice prompt will ask you to recharge. (You can buy the cheapest SIM card with RMB50 at about RMB90 in the shops on the first floor of this apartment.)

In China, operators charge both incoming and outgoing calls. A non-roaming subscriber of Shenzhouxing needs to pay 0.60 RMB/M for a local call, 0.60 RMB/M plus 0.07 RMB/6 seconds for a long distance call, 0.60 RMB/M plus 0.80 RMB/6 seconds for a international call and 0.60 RMB/M plus 0.20 RMB/6 seconds for a call to Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. Receiving an incoming call cost 0.60 RMB/M. A roaming subscriber within the country needs to pay 0.80 RMB/M for a local call, 0.80 RMB/M plus 0.07 RMB/6 seconds for a long distance call, 0.80 RMB/M plus 0.80 RMB/6 seconds for a international call and 0.80 RMB/M plus 0.20 RMB/6 seconds for a call to Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. Receiving an incoming call cost 0.80 RMB/M plus 0.80 RMB/6 seconds. Ruyitong's rate is a little bit lower.

China Telecom, China Unicom, China Netcom and China Jitong issue IP cards. Rates for international calls are different regarding to different issuers. China Unicom's rate for calls to Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan usually is 1.5 RMB/M, 2.6 RMB/M to America and Canada while 3.6 RMB/M to other countries. The other operators' rates for international calls are either a little bit higher or lower than that of China Unicom. Currently, the IP phone service has covered the whole country, providing international service between China and over 200 countries and regions.

IDD service is available at all hotels and post offices. China country code is 86 and outgoing international code is 00. Telephone booths can be seen everywhere, in hotels, restaurants, airports as well as on the street. Various phone cards are sold in China, available in post offices inside hotels or at most newsstands on the street. Among them IC card and IP card are recommended for convenience and low price respectively.

Most public telephones you see in China are IC telephones, which are for local, long distance call and IDD. Generally IC telephone cards are available in amount of 20 RMB, 30 RMB, 50 RMB and 100 RMB. The rate for local call is 0.20 RMB/3 minutes while a call exceeding 3 minutes is charged 0.10 RMB per 6 seconds for the extra. Long distance call rate varies according to the distance. International calls with IC telephone cards are relatively expensive, usually over 10 RMB/M. During off peak period and holidays, calls with IC cards enjoy discounts up to 50%. Emergency calls 121 (weather), 119(fire), 120 (hospital), 110 (police) are free and require no phone cards. IC card is issued by China Telecom solely.
